James Fredericks, a well known whitewater kayaker & Prineville Hotshots Firefighter from Bend, Oregon was involved in a near fatal cliff diving accident on December 6th, 2000 at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego CA.  He seriously injured his spine & broke his neck,  fracturing vertebrae and crushing disks which left him totally paralyzed below the neck.  He was in a "halo" for 2 1/2 months, which was recently removed.   Previously, he only  had some minimal arm and wrist movement, but is very slowly improving. .

James had a major surgery on Tuesday night, December 19th.  Bone was taken from his hip and from a doner bone bank & fused to his vertebrae, replacing the crushed disks.
The surgery was a deemed a success, but left him unable to eat or drink for a couple of days and had to be hooked back up to an IV.  James spent 3 weeks at the UCSD Hospital in San Diego, then transferred on 12/28/00 to the VA Spinal Cord Injury Center, adjacent to the VA Hospital in La Jolla, CA.  He spent 4 1/2 months as an inpatient there, where he had 24 hour care as he slowly recovred, underwent daily physical therapy, and learned how to become more independent with his injury.  He found himself spending more & more time in his wheelchair rather than being bedridden when he was first injured.  James was released on April 22nd, and now shares an apartment in downtown San Diego so he can continue his physical therapy.at the VA SCI Center.  He is doing well, and spends 3 days a week in physical therapy.
James' younger brother Tom is in San Diego and is James' caretaker, and has a job as a bartender/waiter to help make ends meet as the rehabilitation process continues. Tom has been a great blessing.

There are several ways to keep in touch.  We have set up a   guest book.  Please feel free to post on it.  Tom makes sure that James sees it, and James really enjoys reading all the entries.  You can also send a personal email to James and/or family at the addresses listed on the contacts page.

Many people have asked what they can do to help.  James had no insurance at the time of the accident.  He has no source of income until Social Security kicks in starting in July.  Meanwhile, he has rent to pay in Bend, as well as living expenss during his rehabilitation process in San Diego.  Thanks to some great friends, we now have a bank fund set up for James at Bank of the Cascades.  Click on this link to find out  How You Can Help.
